Black Friday

Only in America would people violently trample each other for discounts; exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have…
Working hard today, running out of time for two approaching deadlines. Lucky for me I’m surrounded by many wonderful bars and cafes to help with motivation. Unfortunately I’m also surrounded by pretentious hipsters.
Then it occurred to me, am I also a hipster?
I don’t have the answer. I don’t feel like a hipster, but………

I find that I can’t get down to writing - or more appropriately, any activity that requires me to stop procrastinating - without listening to a series of motivational Disney songs. As I was never a huge Disney fan, I find this phenomenon quite fascinating.

Paul Higgins: Thanks for the great response CrunchyBytes (Alan Tupper). Have reblogged it here because people should read it. Also tweeted it out with our original post and your comments

How did we misread the future so badly? Mind you, this Second Life hype didn’t involve distant, sci-fi predictions about the future. (“Someday we’ll all...

BBC News - How to predict the future
However, there is an entire profession that takes a different view. For futurologists, or futurists as they often like to abbreviate themselves, there are patterns, rhythms, signs and pointers to the future that can be discerned and measured in the here and now.
“I think there is a false dichotomy between the idea that we can predict the future...

Speaking of Reddit, here is a collection of life hacks worth checking out.
The Lost Generation →
Found out about Jonathan Reed’s poem Lost Generation today thanks to Reddit. It’s fantastic. It has two different messages when read forward or backwards.
I’m not one for poetry, but I thought this was great. Check it out!

Carrot City: Urban Agriculture Exhibition in... →
Fun! I’ve been looking up quite a bit on urban agriculture and the like over the last few weeks and I turned up this link/project on Reddit. Didn’t realize it was from Ryerson University (Toronto University!) until I stumbled across this.
“Carrot City is a fabulous display of the possibilities of urban agriculture, both vertical and horizontal, in an exhibition at...
I’m employed again! Feels great.
Essentially this is my first job since the fall of 2009 and first retail gig in many, many more years. Feels absolutely fantastic though; my school schedule really only ties me up two days a week (more or less) and needed some more momentum. The extra cash and company perks definitely don’t hurt either.
Yaaaaaaay!

What is Mental Environmentalism? →
Adbusters had an interesting article about “Mental Environmentalism” about a year ago. I was late to the party and have been meaning to share it for the last few weeks. It’s short and worth a read. Excerpt below:
“If a key insight of environmentalism was that external reality, nature, could be polluted by industrial toxins, the key insight of mental environmentalism is...

I was catching up on old episodes of CBC’s Q with Jian Ghomeshi this afternoon and came across an interesting subject on his October 6th episode. Jian started with an interview with Jane Osmond who is at the forefront of a campaign to get Facebook to remove a page dedicated to jokes about rape.
First off I think Jane had some interesting points. That said, while I’d definitely never...
Now that I’m actually actively using Tumblr on a more personal note, I’m not sure what to do about my previous posts of random internet nonsense. Deleted two pages of old posts today, unsure if I should keep the rest for preservation’s sake or axe them.

I’ve been thinking about visiting a pumpkin patch a lot lately. I’m surprised that so few farms capitalize on the obvious corn maze name: Maize Maze. I’d be all over that shit!

Why Iceland Should Be in the News, But Is Not →
A friend of mine just posted a great article on Facebook about Iceland’s political landscape and their revolution over the past fews years. The article is definitely worth the few minutes out of your day to read.
As my friend said “”..Remember when Iceland was an example for the world of how bad the economic collapse was going to get? Well it looks like now they want to be an...

With the number of animated gifs and pop culture references, some times I feel like Tumblr is what would happen if MySpace fucked Livejournal and their child grew up to be a pretentious teenager.
