US lawmakers prodded by the frozen food industry have moved to protect schools’ ability to count pizza sauce as a vegetable in lunches for students.
In an annual spending bill covering the US Department of Agriculture, which has oversight over subsidised school meals, a joint House-Senate panel voted to prevent the agency from restricting pizza, hot chips, and starchy vegetables.

TED talk from Roger Doiron of Kitchen Gardeners International, a network of people taking a hands-on approach to re-localizing the global food supply.

Key points from talk (as summarized by end of the video):

  • Increasing access to foods that are healthy for us and the plant are the greatest challenge we face
  • ‘Kitchen gardens’ will be a key part of the solution and represent a cost-effective investment.
    (After tallying his families own expenditures, they found an annual savings of $2000)
  • Everyone has a role to play in planting and promoting gardens

Interesting podcast on permaculture. It’s only 10 minutes, however you can easily apply the newly created Wadsworth Constant for the meat of the content. Favourite line (paraphrased): I can buy 1000 lettuce seeds for the price of one head of lettuce in the grocery store.
